The board works exactly as expected BUT even drawing only 1 amp it gets extremely hot. The heatsink as supplied is smaller than the one shown in the picture and has only 10 fins. There is also no heatsink compound between the chip and the heatsink. Fitting the board onto a much larger heatsink and using heatsink compound solves the issue when working at 1 amp but I don't think it would survive long working at 3 amps. Attaching a cooling fan would be a good idea.

As an electronic engineer, believe me when I say that I connected everything up correctly and not only did the board fail to work but it drew mega amps and got hot immediately. In order to verify that the motor was not to blame I totally disconnected it and the board still started to fry. There appeared to be no obvious faults like solder bridges so I e-mailed the supplier and they wanted photographs etc. when all I needed was a working unit I could trust. I ordered a different product which worked perfectly.

Bought 4 for a home CNC currently driving NEMA 17 motors at 1A but wanted to be able to upgrade. Controller is arduino without any shield. All worked straight out of the packet. No evidence of steps being missed either at full step or 1/8 microstep. Bargain drivers in my book.
