Sharpener arrived as a nicely boxed set. Of course I tossed the box as it was a little crushed in shipping, but if not for that, the box would be worth saving for storage. As I unpacked the unit I was impressed with the weight and heft of this sharpener. Normally I would ignore the instruction manual on any "simple" gadget like this and just go for It with good success. I quickly realized that technique would only delay success, so I dove into the manual straight away. Following the diagram, I had the unit assembled in just a few minutes. Again, following every step in the usage instructions, I was sharpening pretty well almost immediately. My results steadily improved, and after three or four knives I finally got the razor sharp results I had been hoping for. Seeing what the unit was capable of persuaded me to go back and do over the first few blades for optimum sharpness. So, FWIW, I have suggestions. Angle is of paramount importance. You must match the grind or bevel angle of each blade exactly. The supplied Dykem marker is just the ticket and makes angle matching easy. Follow instructions and you will have the correct angle with just one final adjustment. Second bit of advice is to start with a wide blade rather than a narrow one. Wider is easier to learn with and this is mentioned in the manual. Third is to use the sharpener while seated. I easily attached the suction mount to my ceramic cooktop and began standing and had immediate difficulty maintaining a smooth, even stroke. I grabbed a kitchen stool and enjoyed a huge improvement. After seating myself, my strokes smoothed out nicely and I began to see real results. With a unit like this that requires some practice many would benefit from a detailed video, which might be out there, but a link should be provided. So, a sturdy, well constructed device that does its job after some practice. Not for those unwilling to devote some time to the learning curve...Read full review

After some major finagling I finally have sharpening system I can use. The suction base is garbage but you can get around that by using epoxy to fix the swivel apparatus in place and mount the base permanently to work bench or other stable surface. Also, the rubber suction base is made of very low grade rubber that degrades very quickly and will leech black residue all over anything it comes in contact with, it is pure garbage. The blade clamp is poorly designed and I ended up mounting a neodymium magnet under the platform to hold blades in place while sharpening. If you do not make these modifications you will never have much luck with this sharpening system. I wanted a sharpening system that was affordable and this one covered my needs, but not without a bit of ingenuity on my part. If you want a system that is ready to go right out of the box then look elsewhere for your sharpening needs.Read full review

I bought this machine because my fingers were getting bloodied from the normal stones. I did a little reading and saw the APEX pro sharpening machine. Loved that idea until I saw the cost. Don't need to sharpen tons of knifes so spending that large amount seemed wasteful. But did a little more looking and found this one.. So watched the video on how to use one. Took a lower value knife and try it(cleaver actually) and worked on figuring out how to get the edge I wanted. After the first try and edge was a little uneven, not the machines fault but mine. I then extend the blade out a little further and that did the trick. I then did 5 more knifes and the extending the blade out further worked each time. The stones that came with it should work for most people and I got some that filled In the gaps at the higher grit levels. Would I recommend this to someone else, that is a big yes and my only advice would be try a cheaper knife until you are comfortable with the process and how to get the edge you want. So practice makes prefect really is the answer/Read full review

This is the first time I have had this kind of knife sharpner. I foind a set of Henkel cutlery set at a thrift store. I thought i was buying a cheap set of knives . The knives wete not sharp so I used the knife sharpner and it did a great job getting the knife sharp. It was my first time but I will get better as time goes on. This is a great buy. Don't be shy about trying it out. You can't go wrong.

Product itself isn't bad. It's good for the price. I'd definitely recommend buying other stones for it since the ones with it are of poor quality. Good stones plus this platform would be a great decision and much cheaper than the brand named product.
